"'Wait, wait, you can't leave yet. You're tied for first,'" Legerski recalled hearing as she made her way from the high jump pit at the southwest end of the stadium.
It turns out the Class 4A girls high jump competition wasn't quite over.

Gillette took the early lead in the girls team race, with a 10 point margin over Laramie; defending state champion Kelly Walsh sits third, a point back of the Plainsmen. Rock Springs took the boys team lead over Cheyenne Central. Laramie senior Derrek May won the boys long jump, while Riverton senior Hannah Svilar won the girls shot put title.
Madison Legerski was well on her way to the fence that separates the track from the shot put area at Harry Geldien Stadium when she heard people calling her name.
"It was total number of misses," Laird said, "and they had the exact same total number Nike Air Force 1 Ultra Flyknit Low Black/Black/Dark Grey/White of misses, so the jump off competition."

By rule, a jump off would be used to break the tie, starting with the height the last three competitors failed to clear, moving down until a winner was crowned. If two jumpers cleared the same height, the bar would move up an inch until a clear winner emerged.
"A new thing, definitely," said Legerski, who is the daughter of University of Wyoming women's basketball coach Joe Legerski. "I thought I had got second. So I took off my shoes, I was sitting around, waiting to go talk to my Air Force 1 Low Black And Gold

There was some contention by a group of 4A coaches that Hof should have won, based on the fact that she cleared 5 0 on her first attempt, whereas Legerski and Oates did not. But Wyoming High School Activities Association commissioner Ron Laird said that once the rule was examined and clarified with all parties, the correct decision had been made.
