Sam Bone of Las Cruces said he has been researching family roots and is interested in the history of Juneteenth.

Michael Williams, NAACP membership chairman, and Juneteenth event chairperson Curtis Rosemond both said they were looking forward to next year's celebration.

Members of Doa Ana County NAACP said a much larger event is in the works for 2015.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Union Soldiers led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and all slaves were now free. The joyful celebration that followed was named Juneteenth. The annual marking of that day has now spread throughout the United States and the world, and is particularly popular in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Oklahoma.

Saturday's entertainment Nike Air Force 1 High Retro Qs Summit White/Black included Bobbie Green and the New Mexico State University Gospel Choir. The event opened with a color guard ceremony led by Marine Corps League El Perro Diablo Detachment No. 478.

"It will be the 150th anniversary and we're planning a big celebration at the Las Cruces Convention Center. Juneteenth is a great day for African Americans, one with a lot of significance. A lot of people don't realize how long it took for the news to reach the Deep South that slavery had ended. Freedom is the best thing you can ever have to celebrate," Williams said.

Juneteenth, which welcomes all members of the community, attracted a diverse, multicultural group of celebrants.

Two scholarships were awarded, to Centennial High School students Kelly Duffy and Nora Rodriguez.
