The sand isn't suitable for use in hydraulic fracturing, an oil and gas production process in which water, chemicals and sand are forced into the earth to break rock and free up resources. Goodrich said the silica near Glendo is too small and the wrong shape to aid the process.
While Brecht said he's got reason to be optimistic, he also stressed that the project is years away from reality.

Anderson said whether the state could repurpose the $100,000 previously allotted for study is still under discussion. The money was originally appropriated to the school to study Wyoming silica sand and its potential use in Men Air Force 1 glass manufacturing, but school staff later found archived studies they felt were too recent to justify a new study, and suggested the money be used elsewhere.
But the sand, he says, is low in phosphorus and boron, two silica contaminants that are difficult and expensive to remove. Because of the low levels of those contaminants and the low relative cost of Wyoming natural gas and electricity, Goodrich believes he can cheaply produce silicon metal.
James Goodrich, founder of Goodrich Land Research and a former Colorado resident, wants to study the Cassa silica sand deposit about six miles south of Glendo. Goodrich thinks the deposit estimated somewhere around 25 million tons in ground could be used to produce silicon metal, an ingredient in solar panels and an ingredient used to lighten other metals.

The plan which could include a sand mine and a nearby production facility has attracted the attention of at least one state lawmaker.
"I'm trying to work with people in the state to develop this as Nike Air Force 1 Low Flyknit Women's
a multipronged industrial venture right there in Platte County," he said.
The sand could be used in glass manufacturing, he said, but would be an unlikely fit because of high transportation costs.
Anderson said he hopes the study will focus on both the Cassa deposit and other sand deposits around the state, attempting to gauge how they could benefit Wyoming.
"I figured out pretty quickly that this deposit is unique," he said. "This is not only a resource of a deposit that is unique, but it's a confluence of resources."
"My vision here is an organic, Wyoming, Platte County if possible, but certainly a Front Range project to where this is all done organically in state of Wyoming," he said. "At the end of the day, the majority of this deposit is state land. I'm just a lease owner."
His plans are still preliminary, he said, as he seeks funding for further study of the available resource and what it could be used for. If his studies return good enough results, Goodrich said Nike Air Force Low On Feet
"What I'm doing is trying to assist in finding ways of increasing manufacturing and adding value to Wyoming products," he said. "We're adding value to both Wyoming and Platte County."

"We're still quite a ways out from knowing what kind of economic development it might provide," he said. "I think there's a lot of potential, but there's a huge amount of steps we have to get through before we go there."We provide this community forum for readers to exchange ideas and opinions on the news of the day. The facilities could bring 150 to 250 jobs to Platte County. Dan Brecht, county economic development director, said such an impact would be vital.
Goodrich said he's contacted laboratories willing to help him study the sand for future use. He's also reached out to the University of Wyoming for potential collaboration.
"If we can get some really decent long term jobs, I think that would be awesome," he said. "It would be a great opportunity for the county."
Wyoming Sen. Jim Anderson, R Glenrock, last week told the state Legislature's Joint Minerals, Business and Economic Development Committee that he planned to ask that $100,000 previously appropriated for University of Wyoming silica glass research be reassigned to a study that would fit Goodrich's plan.
A Massachusetts land researcher is working with at least one Wyoming state senator to determine whether a large sand deposit near Glendo could be used to produce silicon metal.

Goodrich said he was first drawn into the area in the late 1990s. He's held leases on the state owned land since 2006.
year. He said he'd also prefer to keep sand refining in the area, rather than exporting a raw product elsewhere for processing.
After he completes his study, Goodrich would then need to enter into a more detailed feasibility study to determine how the operation would run, where facilities would be located and whether it would be fiscally justifiable. That process could take two years.
Goodrich's plan is several years and studies away from fruition. First, he said, he needs to study the resources in the area to learn more about how the sand could be used. He said that study should take about six months. But it still needs funding.
