He said: "Poetry and music make people realise anything is possible. Some people believe they can't make up a poem because they haven't been to school or because that's what they've been told in the past.
"Writing helps me to get it off my chest. It's a really good kind of therapy."
Neil has a degree in music technology and has written more than 60 poems about his physical and emotional experiences of living with illness.

He said: "Before I got ill I used to sing and write songs but the treatment I had meant I couldn't sing any more.
Many of the poems will be on display at an exhibition which will tour the city's adult hospitals including the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire in November.
"I loved listening to other people's ideas and I guess I've learnt poetry can be about having fun and not worrying if the lyrics are a bit rubbish because you can say anything you want through poems," he said.
He said: "Anyone can do it. The trick is to start off with something simple, like the place you are in, and build it up from there.
"The patients and staff in the first workshop wrote a great one about the mishaps encountered on a trip to the Northern General and we based another poem simply around a painting on the wall."
Neil Smith, 25, from Chesterfield, who has been a patient on the teenage cancer unit at Weston Park Hospital for years, found the workshops beneficial.

Ian, who is Barnsley Football Club's poet in residence and an honorary doctor of Sheffield Hallam University, believes poetry is about laughter which in turn makes people feel better.
